History

Mitchell-Neilson Schools is one of the oldest schools in the Murfreesboro City Schools' district, giving it a rich history in Murfreesboro’s community. Built in the 1950s, the school originally served first through eighth grades. Over the years, it expanded to add a primary school and a day care center for our staff. This design makes up the unique “one-school-two-campuses” Mitchell-Neilson Schools. MNS maintains influential partnerships with institutions throughout the community which have included Bob Parks Realty, Kroger, Sinking Creek Farms, and various departments within Middle Tennessee State University, just to name a few.

MNS has adopted the Leader in Me leadership school model, reshaping the lives and minds of its students. By using the Leader in Me philosophy and principles, teachers, staff, students, and parents are developing a culture of leadership by teaching, modeling, and practicing Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Leadership language is integrated into daily instruction, and students are challenged to seamlessly utilize and apply the 7 Habits not only to their acquisition of grade level standards, but in their daily lives. This model has completely transformed the school-wide mission of MNS. We are Developing Leaders One Child at a Time.
